Join the Executive Committee in welcoming Stefanie Ortiz-Cidlik (USAGSO Chief Executive) to Singapore in an informal Town Hall setting. This is an exciting event as rarely do executives from the USA home office visit Singapore.
She will be talking about some of the exciting new technologies and membership initiatives that USAGSO will offer to members and volunteers this summer and on into the coming years. This will also be a unique opportunity for a Q&A session with the head of the entire USAGSO organization; you don't want to miss it!
When: May 6, 2017 5:30 – 7:30 PM
Where: Cairnhill Community Center (map)
We ask that every Troop please sign up at least one representative to attend. |

It's that time of year again! Overnight Camp is one of the most popular USAGSO-Singapore events every year; you don't want to miss it! It is always a fun weekend-away-from-home for Second-year Brownies and older Girl Scouts. The girls enjoy outdoor activities, crafts, campfires, songs, make new friends, exchange SWAPs and do kapers (chores).
When: March 3rd - 5th, 2017
Where: Camp Sarimbun
*IMPORTANT: Before registering, please read ALL the information on this page.*
Where is Camp Sarimbun? It is located in Jalan Bhatera, a quiet and lush part of Singapore, with gated grounds near several other local camps. The camp facilities include a welcome hall, dining facilities, enclosed cabins with bunk beds, toilet & shower facilities, campfire area, parade ground, activity fields, an obstacle course and a zip line among many other amenities.
Bus transportation is available to/from Camp at the Singapore American School (in Woodlands) and Cairnhill Community Club (near Newton Food Centre) and must be reserved as part of your registration. If you plan on driving, be aware it can be difficult to find; it is not located correctly in many commercial GPS devices and mobile device apps!
What Happens at Camp?Overnight Camp is often the highlight of the year for Girl Scouts in Singapore. It is a chance to be independent, have fun and learn new things all in a safe setting away from home for an entire weekend. All activities and cabin oversight are organized and run by parents and older Girl Scout Program Aides/Counselors to keep the girls busy and engaged throughout the weekend.
Overnight Camp is intended to be a full weekend away-from-home experience. Campers are required to stay the entire weekend on the Camp grounds from check-in Friday until pick-up on Sunday. Campers cannot check-in after Friday, and cannot leave Camp on Saturday or early Sunday except for health or safety reasons.
If you child has never been to a sleep-away-from-home camp before or if you have specific concerns, please read "Is Your Child Ready for Overnight Camp?" Before registering, consider carefully if your child is ready (and you are as well) for a multi-day overnight experience away from home.

What Should She Bring?Singapore weather at this time of year is typically hot, humid and rain is always possible. In addition, some activities will be messy and muddy and each Girl Scout must take care of themselves the entire weekend, so pack accordingly. In addition, this year girls need to bring their own bedding, pillow and “mess kit” (plate, cup, utensils, etc). We know that's a lot to remember, so we've compiled this handy checklist that all Girl Scouts and parents should use when packing:
[Download the Overnight Camper Checklist]
Please note that Girl Scouts are NOT allowed to bring any food/snacks/sweets or electronic devices (iPods/iPads, cell phones, radios, electronic games, etc.) to Camp.
Program Aides / CounselorsOvernight Camp is also a great opportunity for older Girl Scouts to develop their leadership skills. Girls who are 2nd Year Cadettes or higher may register as a Program Aid (PA)/Counselor. They will work with the Camp event organizers and volunteers to run the Camp and are entitled to a significantly reduced fee. Each girl registered as PA/Counselors must undergo training prior to the start of camp; information on date/time/location of the training sessions will be sent after we receive her registration. IN ADDITION, all first-time PAs need to earn at least one LIA badge beforehand to be eligible this year.
Parent ParticipationCamp doesn't have to be fun JUST for the girls and all work for the grown-ups! Enjoy some S’Mores with your daughter! Savor the outdoors with a fabulous Sunset!
Cabin Moms will be assigned in a separate cabin from their daughter, which allows the camper to get the independent feel of overnight camp, while allowing for a nice bonding experience. The experience is fun and unique – take advantage of it. Meals and lodging free for all Cabin Moms or daytime volunteers who stay overnight.
That said, Overnight Camp is our largest and most complex event every year, and without participation from everyone we simply cannot do it. As part of the registration process, please also sign up for a volunteer assignment during the Camp weekend. Most jobs require no more than 4 hours commitment (but we'd love to have you sign up for more)!
[Click here to sign up as a Parent Volunteer]
NOTE: If you plan to be a Cabin Mom for the duration of Camp, you need to sign up for three (3) slots (Friday Overnight, Saturday Daytime & Saturday Overnight).
Registration & FeesYou must register for Overnight Camp online; space is limited to 120 Girl Scouts so please make sure you register as soon as possible.
Camper Fee: $200
PA/Counselor Fee: $90
PayPal is the preferred method of payment, but alternate payment instructions will be emailed with your registration confirmation. We cannot provide refunds for unused registrations, so please check your schedule carefully before registering.
Registration closes and full payment must be received on 14-Feb; unpaid registrations after that date will be CANCELLED. Please read our Payment Policy for further details.

Parent Participation
As always, we need a lot of parents to help supervise the activities and large number of young children that will participate in this event. There are a wide variety of Volunteer Assignments available; you will be busy and you will not be bored! Please note, as an Adult Volunteer you will be responsible for specific activities, so you WILL NOT stay with your child throughout the entire event. Only adults who sign up to volunteer will be allowed at camp. We apologize in advance if you are not able to secure a volunteer slot, as they are allotted on a first come first served basis.
[Click Here to Sign up for a Volunteer Assignment]
According to USAGSO rules, we must have a minimum of 1 Adult Volunteer for every 4 girls attending camp. If the ratio isn’t right, the USAGSO organization will not allow us to hold this event. If we do not receive enough volunteers we will be reaching out to the Troops to look for additional volunteers.
Camp is an opportunity for younger Girl Scouts to experience teamwork and personal responsibility in a safe and controlled environment. Therefore, parents without a Volunteer Assignment may not attend Day Camp. When registering your daughter, please ensure that she is willing to attend a day long event without your presence.
Older girls will also be working with the younger girls. This reinforces leadership skills in the older girls and also sets a wonderful example for our Daisies and Brownies.
Bus Transportation
Chartered bus service will be provided for all Girl Scouts and Team Leader Volunteers to and from the venue at Camp Christine. Buses will be available from two locations, the Singapore American School (SAS) in Woodlands and Cairnhill Community Centre near the Newton Food Centre, and will return everyone to the same original locations. All Girl Scout campers MUST ride the chartered buses; parents are not permitted to drop off/pick up their daughters at the camp venue! The bus ride is a measure implemented to make sure your girls stay safe. Team Leaders will get to know their charges on the bus ride to camp which helps them take better care of them during the day. Additionally, bus rides are familiar to many girls who go to school in Singapore and getting on the bus and saying bye is often far easier emotionally than walking in big camp gates. Departure: Buses will begin loading at 1:15 PM and depart promptly for Camp Christine at 1:30 PM. Please be there ON TIME - they will not wait for late arrivals! Return: Buses will start loading at Camp Christine at 8:15 PM, depart at 8:30 PM and return to their original locations approximately 9:00 PM. Please be mindful of the volunteers’ time and efforts and arrive on-time to pick up your daughters! Buses may run late if the girls don’t board quickly leaving camp. Be patient and don’t worry: we’re coming!
Registration & Fees
The registration fee is $75; this covers the cost of bus transportation, snacks & dinner, and all activities and crafts. In addition, every registered Girl Scout will receive a gift bag, an event patch and a special Day Camp T-Shirt. Please see the T-Shirt Sizing Guide to ensure you select the right size on the registration form.
Registration will close on 31-Jan-2017 and no new registrations will be accepted after that date. There is a lot of prep work to organize the teams, buses, food, shirts and so much more. Full payment is also due no later than 31-Jan-2017; all unpaid registrations after that date will be cancelled without notice.
Unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds for cancellations, so please check your schedule carefully before registering. In addition, if the weather is deemed to be dangerous and a risk to the health of our campers, Day Camp will be cancelled with no refunds.
If needed, financial aid assistance is available. Please contact our Chair, Melinda Murphy Hiemstra, at singaporeocc@yahoo.com to make arrangements. All requests will remain confidential.
What Should She Bring?
Singapore weather at this time of year is typically hot, humid and rain is always possible. In addition, some activities can be messy or muddy. Please label everything you send with your Girl Scout's name, packed in an easy-to-carry backpack or shoulder bag (also with her name on it). Ensure your Girl Scout has the following:
- Sunscreen & insect repellent (please apply BEFORE getting on camp bus)
- Sneakers/trainers that can get wet & dirty (NO flip flops/sandals!)
- Hat with a large brim or visor
- Refillable water bottle
- Sweatshirt/jumper (in case it gets cool at Campfire time)
- SWAPS (for trading with other Girl Scouts) What are SWAPS?
Please DO NOT bring toys, jewelry, electronics, or any valuable/personal items that are expensive/difficult to replace. Please do not bring your daughter’s GIrl Scout vest. Again, please LABEL everything with your Girl Scout's full name!
Questions? Need more Information?
If you have any questions, concerns or need more information we have set up a dedicated Camp mailbox; please email gsocamp@gmail.com.
Please direct all Day Camp inquiries to this mailbox as it is being monitored by the Organizing Committee. They will be able to provide the fastest, most informative response. |
